Green manures

The Making Good Better project recently held the first workshop for our 15 focus farmers at Rob and Jo Bradley's property Woollen Park. The topic for the day was sustainable rotations and green manures. We started the day with an excellent overview by Rob of his Nuffield Scholarship, which looked at the sustainability of mixed farming systems. Rob's key concern is that in our cropping systems inputs and efforts are on an upwards trend to keep producing the same yields - not sustainable from any measure. As he travelled the world, Rob found that integrated livestock and cropping systems (like ours in Tassie) are actually quite rare and "old fashioned”. Instead, the trend of overseas commercial farms is increasingly to separate livestock and cropping as the system intensifies. He ventured into the organic sphere where integration is still practised and an important part of the nutrient cycle. An organic cropping/dairy farm which he visited relies on clover pastures for nitrogen inputs - the farmer had been conventional and converted to organics for economic reasons and said his key learning had been that he would never use nitrogen fertilisers again! While the long term productivity of this brave move is unknown, it does demonstrate this farmer's faith in the benefit of green manure crops.
Sam Rees (our in house soil boffin) plugged the details from Rob's cropping rotations into a TIAR soil carbon model - Black Magic. Based on the starting soil carbon level and the cropping rotation used (including stubble management), the model predicts the trend and final value of soil carbon after a defined number of years. We looked at some interesting scenarios and found that fallowing ground has the single biggest impact on soil carbon levels. It was also pretty clear that pastures contribute a huge amount of carbon to the soil system.
Finally Pete Aird from Serve-Ag went through some trial data and information prepared by Jason Lynch on his recent travels overseas, reviewing green manure crops and biofumigants. Both are used as a matter of course overseas. The key to using them successfully is planning properly - work backwards from your next crop and when you want to sow it. This will give the number of weeks your cover crop will have in the ground, which will be a key consideration in what will be most suitable (e.g. clovers are slow to get going while oats are very quick). Other things to consider are the amount of material left at the end of the cover crop and how you will handle this (e.g. spray, cultivate, etc) so you don't compromise planting your next commercial crop. Whether you want to graze your cover crop is another consideration.
The day wrapped up with a good look around the farm and at what Rob's been doing - drainage was a key factor on many of the soils he is farming, and it is critical to get this right to maximise your paddock's potential. Raised beds was one option used by Rob and he took us to see a paddock which had been dryland poppies last year and was then sown to wheat (with the beds left in place). All looked good, despite the recent wet! The tour moved on to see a strong contrast between a paddock where broccoli had been grown last year and its mate, which had grown grass. Broccoli is a late crop and this paddock had been grazed before the stubble was ploughed back in. There was a clear difference in structure between the two areas, with the grass paddock looking better structured.
We finished off with a look at the dairy and at what soils look like under the dairy pastures - answer fantastic!
All in all a really informative day and the group were very grateful to Rob for sharing his thoughts with us.

So what makes your soils tick?

It seems many of us are eager to fill in the gaps of knowledge about soil biology if the numbers attending the soil biology workshops held at Hamilton and Deloraine at the end of June are anything to go by.

Joel Williams had a thorough and evidence-based approach to giving an introduction to the world that's teeming with life beneath our feet. He covered the basics of soil biology - we learnt about fungi, fungi and more fungi, and about bacteria, protozoa and nematodes. Did you know that the smell that makes healthy, earthy soil smell so deliciously earthy is actually produced by a soil organism - actinobacteria? Micorrhizal fungi can massively increase the amount soil a plant can exploit to extract water and nutrients and also play a role in sequestering carbon and holding the soil together - ever heard of glomalin? This is a compound secreted by fungi which contains carbon and is stable for up to 40 years. It improves soil aggregation and protects soil organic matter. The glomalin story highlights a reason why understanding soil life is a key part of managing soil carbon – soil organisms both feed on carbon and produce carbon-rich products. Looking after the soil biology can help to preserve the carbon in the soil.

Joel had some good advice on how to measure soil biology - the difficulty of doing this is one of the reasons that soil biology is not as well understood as soil physics or chemistry, however there are now many techniques and tests that can be used to determine what critters are making your soils home, and what they're up to. Consider monitoring soil biology for some of your paddocks, as well as soil chemistry - it could tell you quite a bit about your management and improve your understanding of what makes your soils tick.

Joel finished off by covering the effect of farm inputs on soil life - from composts and fish oils right through to fertilisers and herbicides. The photo below shows fungal hyphae "swimming" in compost tea.

One of the key messages from the day was to think about the impact your management may be having on soil biology - and work to minimise the impact (e.g. if you need to cultivate be aware of the disturbance it will cause to the soil biology and try to "make up for it" e.g. give them additional food to get their numbers back up quickly). You don’t need to radically change your farming practices overnight to improve how you manage soil biology – just a few small changes can help make your farm environment a more friendly place for the critters in the soil. Soil biology workshop coming up

Making Good Better is running 2 workshops on soil biology - on at Deloraine on Thursday 23 June, and a second one at Hamilton on Friday 24 June. The workshops are being presented by Joel Williams and will run from 9.30 to 4 each day.
 The workshops will cover 
· The ’need to know’ of soil biology
· How to measure soil biology on your farm
· Soil amendments & products and how these impact on soil biology

Joel Williams is currently working with Biological Farmers Australia and also operates a consultancy educating and advising growers on biological farming systems. He has recently returned from the UK where he operated a commercial soil analysis laboratory and managed an organic farm. He has a keen interest in managing soil microbial balance and plant and soil nutrition to optimise soil health and crop production

Our first trial underway

Our first trial is in and on the ground. One of our Cressy growers has a trial in a paddock of barley stubble where we have applied poppy mark, poppy mulch and compost, and then across these strips of amendments he has cultivated. So we effectively have 8 treatments - the 3 different amendments, plus a control, with no cultivation and then the 4 amendment treatments with cultivation to incpororate. The paddock is to be sown down to pasture and we will be measuring a range of factors including water infiltration, compaction and soil structure, soil biology and nutrients over the coming season. The photo shows Russell collecting a baseline soil sample. Watch this space for updates on how the trial progresses...

Southern Farming Systems field day

Leanne and Sam from the MGB project team attended the Southern Farming Systems precision farming field day on Friday 11 March, to promote the soil carbon and soil health message. The photo shows Sam messing about with some soil samples to be tested for labile soil carbon (a quick and useful test we did on the day for those who brought along soil samples). Making good better is underway

The project has kicked off with the selection of our farmer groups. Rachel is working with some individual farmers around Deloraine and Devonport, Leanne is working with a Cressy-based group and Mel is kicking the dirt with some boys from Bothwell. The groups are now in the process of deciding what trials and other activities they want to investigate – watch this space for updates.
